Spiritual Practice

Facilitated by Nancy Van Fleet

In our Christian experience, are we ever aware of a gap between what we know and what we do?  In truth, knowing something with our minds and even believing it with our hearts doesn't necessarily mean it will change the way we live.  Put another way, we cannot think our way into a new way of living, we must live our way into a new way of thinking!

In the spiritual life, what gets in the way of living true to our most deeply held beliefs?  What blocks a genuine experience of God's Presence which then leads us to faithful action?  Many insightful thinkers today identify distraction as the culprit and a particular curse of contemporary society.  Some have described it as a modern spiritual disease. Surely, we know that when we're perpetually distracted it is very difficult to discern "the voice of the Lord" and to faithfully follow that voice.

And the cure for our distraction?  From the earliest days of the Christian church through many centuries, our spiritual mothers and fathers developed 'sacred habits' or practices that enable us to tune our inner instruments of spiritual receptivity and to focus our attention, allowing us access to our true selves and to the loving God who dwells within.  Over time, through the faithful exercise of these habits, what we believe and how we live are brought into union.

The Adult Education ministry invites you to take part in a "Sacred Habits" course led by Nancy Van Fleet.  Weekly gatherings will meet for blocks of time during the church year with the selected practices coordinating with the liturgical calendar.  Each of our sessions will provide a quiet space in which to welcome the Spirit's presence -- individually and communally -- and will include teaching and the practice of a particular spiritual habit, silence and periods of listening prayer, as well as an opportunity for group reflection.

We hope you'll consider joining us this fall and Advent season on an adventure of the Spirit's leading!

Join us on Wednesdays, 10/20, 10/27, 11/3, 12/1, 12/8 and 12/15; 8:30 - 9:30 a.m.

We will meet either online or in-person, to be determined.  RSVP to Ashley Hancock at ashley.hancock@fpcnaples.org
