Words from Aaron: The Call to Grace and Forgiveness

Dear Members and Friends of First Presbyterian Church of Naples,

I am so excited to be with you in worship this Sunday! My family and I remain so grateful for the wonderful welcome we have received from the congregation and staff, and we very much look forward to joining you in worship this Sunday morning.

The Scriptural Call to Forgiveness

This Sunday, the lectionary presents us with the theme of forgiveness, which goes hand in hand with the incredible love of Jesus Christ. When we pray the Lord’s Prayer, we pray, “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” Within this prayer, we are doing more than asking God to forgive us; we are also issuing a challenge to ourselves.

In Genesis 50:15–21, Joseph, who was sold into slavery by his brothers, demonstrates profound restraint when he is reunited with them. Rather than responding in kind to the wrong they committed against him, Joseph extends forgiveness and grace. In Matthew 18:21–35, Jesus instructs Peter to forgive another member of the church who sins against him not merely seven times, but seventy-seven times. He then offers the illustration of a slave who is forgiven a tremendous debt, only to go out and demand repayment of a far smaller debt owed to him by another.

Extending God’s Grace to Others

In Jesus Christ, we see the incredible love of God. This is the love that went to the cross and defeated the powers of sin and death so that we might know the incredible grace of God. Accepting that grace means that we, in turn, are called to extend grace to others. The challenge within the Lord’s Prayer is found in the reciprocal nature of forgiveness; however, that forgiveness is not returned directly to God, but extended to others. In other words, having received God’s grace, we are called to offer that same grace to others and to live out Christ’s love in how we seek to forgive others.

As we know, forgiveness can be difficult. But, as in so many things, this is where we need to lean not on our own understanding, but on the strength and wisdom of God. Perhaps, like Joseph in Genesis, forgiveness entails knowing who God is and who we are in relation to God and to others. Or perhaps it is simply recognizing the tragic hypocrisy of the slave in Matthew’s Gospel. Either way, forgiveness, however imperfect, involves faith.

I hope you will join me in worship this Sunday at 10 a.m. as we explore what it means to live out the faith that is ours in Jesus Christ.

Remembering September 11 in Prayer

Additionally, I hope you will join me this week in praying for all those whose lives were forever impacted by the terrorist attacks of 9/11. For the last three years, while living in NYC, on September 11, I would look out a South facing window in my apartment to see powerful beams of light projecting into the night sky in remembrance of the lives lost and in recognition of the heroics displayed by police, firefighters, first responders, and countless others who put themselves in harms way to help others. Like many of you, I’m sure you can remember where you were on that tragic morning, and I’m already aware of at least one congregation member who thankfully made it out of one of the towers that morning. As many of us promised 25 years ago, we will never forget, and we continue to pray for the families and friends who lost someone they love that morning. We also pray with awe and thanksgiving for those who responded so courageously that morning and in the days afterwards, as well as for all who strive to keep us safe on a daily basis.

Words from Aaron: Beginning Our Journey at FPC Naples

Dear Members and Friends of First Presbyterian Church of Naples,

After much anticipation, I am incredibly excited to begin my ministry here at First Presbyterian Church of Naples. I could not have experienced a warmer welcome from the congregation and staff when I first preached for the congregation in July, and my family and I are now deeply grateful for the continued welcome we are receiving and are excited to be part of this community.

The past several weeks have been busy but incredibly exciting. In addition to packing and unpacking, we have purchased a home, as well as a second car (which wasn't necessary in NYC!), Lyla has begun at the First Presbyterian Church Preschool, and, as a family, we are beginning to make Naples our home. Most significant, however, will be getting to know our new church family!

Worship Schedule and Upcoming Sundays

Due to a family wedding that has been on our calendar for some time, I will regrettably not be with you in worship this Sunday, September 6. I am very thankful to the Rev. Dr. Randy Moody, Stated Clerk of the Peace River Presbytery, who will be preaching and presiding at Communion alongside Rev. Rex Childs. I will be watching from afar with eagerness to be among you and preaching on September 13.

As I begin my ministry here, and as my family becomes part of this community, please know how sincerely grateful and excited I am to be here. I look forward to reflecting Christ's love together and to living even more fully into our mission: In the Heart of Naples with the Love of God: We worship, we love, we grow, and we serve.

Reflections on Our Call and Shared Mission

This past Tuesday, on my way to the church for my first official day, I stopped at the beach for a few minutes of quiet reflection. I was filled with gratitude, excitement, and optimism for how God has been at work in my life and in this call to First Presbyterian Church of Naples.

I am eager to meet each of you and to hear about what drew you to First Presbyterian, as well as your hopes and dreams for this congregation. Together, in the days and years ahead, I pray that we will be a light for Christ here in Naples and beyond, helping everyone who walks through our doors experience more of Christ's love and grace, while also bringing that love and grace out into the world.

I am deeply grateful to be beginning this journey with you, and I look forward to all that God has in store for us.

Tomorrow, September 1, officially marks your first day as our Senior Pastor and Head of Staff. Enthusiasm across our congregation and staff has been building ever since that memorable Sunday in July when we were moved by your sermon, “More Than We Can Imagine,” and voted unanimously to call you as our pastor. On behalf of our entire church community, welcome to First Presbyterian Church of Naples!

We are thrilled to welcome you back to your home state. Having been born in Fort Lauderdale and having served congregations in Delray Beach and Palm Beach, your extensive ministry roots across Florida make your arrival all the more meaningful. We also extend our warmest welcome to Laurel, Lyla, and Hannah. We cannot wait to see Lyla in the preschool this fall—with little Hannah set to follow in her footsteps down the road!

Beginning a New Season of Ministry

Pastoral transitions are sacred milestones in congregational life. Having shared our heartfelt gratitude last month with Rev. Dr. Scott Kenefake and his wife, Gail, for their steady interim leadership, we are excited to begin this new season of ministry alongside you, Rev. Rex Childs, and our entire staff.

Over the next few weeks, Naples will begin to awaken as seasonal residents and friends return to Southwest Florida. You arrive at an energizing time as our halls fill back up for Wednesday night dinners, fall programs, Advent, and Christmas Eve—all leading toward the celebration of our congregation’s 75th anniversary next year.

Upcoming September Worship and Pulpit Welcome

To kick off the month, Rev. Dr. Randy Moody will join us as guest preacher on Sunday, September 6, for Labor Day weekend and Holy Communion. Then, on Sunday, September 13, we eagerly anticipate you stepping into the pulpit for the first time to lead Sunday worship. We are calling on our entire congregation—whether worshiping in the Sanctuary or joining online via livestream from across the country—to gather with open hearts and give you and your family a joyful First Pres welcome!

The September 2026 edition of Outreach is officially here. This month marks a major milestone in the life of our congregation as we welcome our new Senior Pastor and Head of Staff, Rev. Dr. Aaron Janklow, celebrate the impact of our local and global mission partners, and kick off a full slate of fall programs.

A Pastoral Message from Rev. Rex Childs

Siblings in Christ,

This is an exciting time in the life of our congregation! As the calendar turns to September, there is a palpable sense of expectation and enthusiasm around the church. We find ourselves standing at a meaningful threshold—looking back with deep gratitude for where God has led us and looking forward with eager anticipation for the future God is preparing for us here in the heart of Naples.

Giving Thanks for Rev. Dr. Scott Kenefake

On Sunday, August 16, we shared a warm farewell with Rev. Dr. Scott Kenefake as he concluded nearly fifteen months of faithful interim ministry among us. Scott capped off his time in our pulpit with his thoughtful four-week sermon series, Gathered by Grace, reminding us that God’s grace stands at the very center of who we are as a community of faith. We give thanks to God for Scott and Gail, and we send them into their next interim call with our prayers and well wishes.

Now, a vibrant new chapter in the story of First Presbyterian Church officially begins!

On September 1, Rev. Dr. Aaron Janklow officially starts his role as our Senior Pastor and Head of Staff. We are grateful to God for leading Aaron to us and for the faithful, diligent work of the Pastor Nominating Committee. Accepting a call to serve a new church is a big change in the life of any pastor and their family. It means moving to a new place, settling into a new community, meeting new people, and adjusting to new schools. It is an exciting but overwhelming time for them. Please join me in keeping Aaron, his wife Laurel, and their children in your prayers as they unpack, explore Naples, and begin to put down roots in SWFL.

Also, be sure to mark your calendars for Sunday, September 13, when we anticipate welcoming Aaron to the pulpit for his first sermon as our installed Senior Pastor. It promises to be a memorable morning of worship, praise, and fellowship as we gather to celebrate this milestone together.

Campus Updates and God's Faithfulness

As you read through this September issue of The Outreach, you will see that our church family is stepping into this new season with energy and purpose. There have been several facilities projects that are happening around our campus. We are working on landscaping in our parking lot, replacing air conditioning units to keep us cool, and we have upgraded our internet service to ensure a better and more consistent livestreaming experience for worship and other special events.

I’m grateful to serve such a vibrant church full of faithful disciples who are welcoming, caring, and generous people. Times of transition can be hard, but they remind us that while seasons change, God’s faithfulness remains constant. I am eager to live into the future God has planned for us, and I look forward to worshipping alongside you as we walk side-by-side into this new season of life for our church.

Rex's Reflections: Welcoming Rev. Lisa Lefkow to FPC Naples

This Sunday we will welcome a guest preacher to our pulpit, although she will be familiar to most of us. Rev. Lisa Lefkow is an ordained Deacon in the United Methodist Church and the CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Collier County. She has preached for us on a summer Sunday for the past few years, and we’re grateful she is returning again this year. Lisa has a tremendously caring heart for God’s people, and I know you will enjoy the Word from the Lord she will bring us on Sunday.

Living a Life Rooted in Genuine Love

Lisa will be preaching on Romans 12:9-21. In this section of Paul’s letter to the church in Rome, he encourages them and us to live a life rooted in love. This love should be genuine and be an imitation of the self-giving love of God most clearly seen in the person of Jesus Christ. He is also clear that this love is not reserved just for the faithful. He calls us to “extend hospitality to strangers” who may or may not believe as we do. Paul even takes this a step further, “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.” Paul himself was at one time a persecutor of the church and so writes from his own understanding and experience of undeserved mercy.

Understanding Mercy and Grace

At the end of our passage, there is a confusing line about how caring for enemies “will heap burning coals on their heads.” It seems to contradict everything that Paul is saying before it. Here, Paul is not saying that caring for enemies will bring punishment to them. Quite the contrary, in fact. Think back to Isaiah, who had an angel touch his lips with a burning coal. He is told, “See, this coal has touched your lips. Now your guilt is removed, and your sins are forgiven.” Caring for the needs of others, even our enemies, helps them in multiple ways.

Rex's Reflections: Who Do You Say I Am?

Welcoming the FGCU Chamber Choir

This Sunday, August 23, we welcome back the Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) Chamber Choir led by Dr. Trent Brown. This has been an annual tradition for over a decade and it’s always a special Sunday when they are with us. The service concludes with the choir surrounding the congregation and singing us out with a blessing. You won’t want to miss it!

The Question at Caesarea Philippi

Our Scripture reading for this week is from chapter sixteen of Matthew’s Gospel. Jesus and his disciples have come to Caesarea Philippi and he asks them two questions. First – “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” and second – “But who do you say that I am?” Jesus enquires about the public’s perception of him in contrast to their more intimate understanding. The public sees Jesus in the same vein as other great figures in Israel’s past, particularly the prophets. But, Peter gives the correct answer, “You are the Messiah, the son of the living God.” Jesus responds with a phrase that has divided opinions on its meaning. There is also a bit of wordplay going on, as well. “…You are Peter (which means “rock”), and on this rock I will build my church…”

What Jesus Means to Us Today

Who do people say that Jesus is today? The Western world continues to see a decline in religiosity and more and more people do not believe as we do. Some even have a negative view of who Jesus is or at least a negative view of those who proclaim to follow him. Who do we say Jesus is? At the most basic level, being a Christian means believing Jesus is Lord. We have lots of names for Jesus: Son of Man, Prince of Peace, Savior, Lord, Word in flesh, but what does Jesus mean to us personally? How does our belief in Jesus affect the way we live our lives?

I look forward to worshipping with you either in-person or online as we explore these questions together while offering our thanks and praise to God. The sermon title is “Who Do You Say I Am?”

Snowball Mountain Challenge VBS: Growing Faith on Sacred Slopes

It brings me such joy to share the heartwarming and inspiring moments that unfolded during our time at VBS, Snowball Mountain Challenge. Our gathering of 32 children and 24 youth and adult participants truly embodied the spirit of intergenerational learning and faith. All week long, we were reminded of our theme verse from Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Like a small snowball rolling down a mountain, our faith and enthusiasm seemed to grow bigger and stronger each day.

One of the true highlights of our week was all our volunteers, including our youth, showing up so faithfully to help everything run smoothly. Watching our young people lead reminded us that God is at work in every generation, shaping and strengthening the body of Christ.

God Sightings and Faith in Everyday Life

There were beautiful “God sightings” throughout our time together. One especially moving moment was watching our participants walk the "prayground" labyrinth—a simple, prayerful path. To see children, youth, and adults moving quietly in silence, wrapped in prayer, truly blessed my heart. And, the Naples Botanical Garden gave us a visit - it truly was a time to appreciate God's creation!

We also wanted faith to continue at home, long after VBS ended. Every parent was sent home with “faith-at-home” practices to weave into everyday life—activities like stargazing, getting our feet in the sand, enjoying ice cream together, or spending time at the playground can all be ways to connect to God. These simple moments become holy invitations to pause and thank God for all the beauty around us.

Celebrating God’s Grace and Surprises

And just for fun, we even had “snow” on Friday on the mountain! It was a joyful reminder that God’s love can surprise us, refresh us, and cover us in grace in the most delightful ways. And, we had a pizza party to formally end our time with families with over 70 people attending! As we look back on this week, our hearts are full, and we give thanks for all that God has done in and through our Snowball Mountain Challenge.

A Fond Farewell: A Message from Rev. Dr. Scott Kenefake

There is something about farewells that always seems to call forth music. As this season of ministry draws to a close, I find myself thinking of two familiar songs: the closing theme from The Carol Burnett Show—“I’m so glad we had this time together”—and the children’s farewell from The Sound of Music: “So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye.” They remind us that endings are also beginnings.

As Gail and I conclude nearly fifteen months with First Presbyterian Church, we do so with deep gratitude. You welcomed us warmly from the very beginning and invited us to share in the life of this remarkable congregation. It has been a privilege to serve alongside you during this important season.

Reflecting on a Meaningful Season

Interim ministry is about helping a congregation prepare for its next chapter, and it has been encouraging to watch this church continue to move forward with confidence and hope. Together, we have celebrated milestones, strengthened ministries, welcomed new members, and continued serving our community and the wider world. We have enjoyed outstanding worship, remarkable music, and the privilege of hosting thoughtful voices like Diana Butler Bass and Barbara Brown Taylor—conversations that reflected this congregation’s commitment to faith that is both intellectually engaged and deeply rooted.

Gail and I have also thoroughly enjoyed living in Naples. We will remember its beauty, its vibrant community, and especially the many friendships we have made here. Those relationships are what we will treasure most.

Looking Ahead with Hope

Many of you have asked what comes next for us. I am in the final stages of discerning my next call and look forward to sharing that news as soon as I am able. Until then, we remain grateful for the opportunity we have had to be part of this congregation’s life.

As you prepare to welcome your next Senior Pastor, I do so with genuine optimism. First Presbyterian Church has exceptional lay leadership, a gifted staff, a vibrant music ministry, a strong commitment to mission, and a congregation that is eager to grow in faith and service. The future is bright.

Thank you for the trust you placed in me, for the friendship you extended to Gail and me, and for the many ways you have enriched our lives. We leave Naples grateful for our time among you and confident that God will continue to bless this congregation in the years ahead.

So, rather than simply saying goodbye, let me simply say: it has been a joy to share this time with you. God bless you all.
